Odell Beckham Jr. Returns to the Giants
Odell Beckham Jr. finds himself in a situation so perfect, it seems almost scripted. A Giants-Cowboys match on Sunday Night Football at MetLife Stadium resonates deeply with him, bringing back memories from his rookie year in 2014 when he became a global sensation due to his stunning one-handed catch. He sees this moment as a reflection of his faith in a greater power and its unpredictable nature.
“I always mention God’s plan,” Beckham expressed following practice on Friday. “As I was trying out and witnessing everything unfold, the NFL announced: ‘Giants, Sunday night, Cowboys.’ It’s unbelievable, really. You want to stay present and not think too much about it.”
This week, he added to the nostalgic theme by dyeing his hair back to platinum blond, his trademark shade, after sporting black all summer long. He cleverly concealed his new look under a helmet and hat during media sessions to keep it under wraps until the game.
“Some of the younger players asked me, ‘Can we see the blond? We need that memory,'” he shared. “Switching things up is fun. I could have black hair forever but I can’t keep this look forever, so it felt like the right time.”
Beckham had all the time in the world to make history on November 23, 2014. During that game, he reached overhead, drawing pass interference, and caught a pass from Eli Manning with three fingers before landing in the end zone for a touchdown. The Giants lost that night, yet the catch became legendary.
This Sunday’s game, however, holds significance beyond nostalgia. “They’ve been asking me, ‘Will you recreate it on Sunday?'” Beckham recalled. “But honestly, I didn’t try to do it back then. It was just a result of prior preparation. I’ve dropped plenty of one-handed catches too. That moment changed my life, for better or worse, because now people tend to define my career by that one play.”
His breathtaking catch has become a staple in football training, inspiring players at every level. Although other remarkable feats have occurred since, Beckham’s catch stands out in memory.
Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy reflected, “I have four boys, and one is currently a receiver at Kansas. Over the past several years, they’ve always attempted one-handed catches during the offseason. I saw Odell in his prime and developed immense respect for him. It’s fantastic to witness his journey and his current focus on the team.”
After a challenging couple of years, Beckham made the Giants’ 53-man roster in training camp, defying expectations. He is one of just four receivers on the team, meaning he’ll likely get playing time.
This Sunday marks Beckham’s first regular-season game for the Giants in 2,842 days—since Week 13 of 2018. In that last game, the dynamic Beckham caught a touchdown, threw a touchdown, and misplayed an onside kick.
Former teammates have reached out to Beckham, reminding him that he’s stepping into a new era. “They say things like, ‘We’re living through you,'” he noted, acknowledging their encouragement. “It’s surreal. It’s a huge testament to the effort I’ve put in to return, and not many get a chance for a storyline like this. I want to seize this opportunity.”
If the preseason is any indication, he’ll likely show off his traditional one-handed catch during warm-ups as the fans will cheer him on eagerly.
“When I run out and hear that stadium, I expect it will explode with energy,” Beckham anticipates. “That’ll be the moment where, you know, your heart races a bit and your eyes might start to get misty.”
“I adore this game, and I’ve dedicated my life to it. I just want to give everything I have to this city, this organization, and these fans. Whatever it takes, I’m here to deliver.”
