Ohio Police Officers Resign Following Alcohol Incident
Officers in Ohio have resigned after reports surfaced of them responding to a service call with blood alcohol levels exceeding twice the legal limit.
In this instance, the police were called by a couple who noticed that their truck door was ajar upon returning from a night out.
When Officer Michael Irvin arrived, the couple quickly sensed that something was off. “He was clearly intoxicated,” they remarked. “He approached us looking unsteady, and we felt it was necessary to call for help,” they shared.
Additional units showed up and performed a breathalyzer test, revealing that Irvin had a blood alcohol content of .0168%, well over the legal limit.
Videos captured by the couple depicted the officers struggling to maintain their composure at the scene. This, frankly, reminded me of how people sometimes act after a few too many drinks, stumbling and unable to keep their balance.
Mayor Edward Colanco mentioned that Irvin was promptly relieved of his duties and fired within two days following the incident on August 23.
Colanco expressed appreciation for public trust and acknowledged the seriousness of the matter. He stated, “We acted quickly once we learned of the situation. There is zero tolerance for such behavior, especially in a role that demands integrity and competence from our officers.”
The incident is still under investigation, and charges have yet to be determined, which could potentially include operating a vehicle while impaired and mishandling firearms while under the influence.
Interestingly, Irvin was not equipped with a body camera during this incident and had joined the police division recently, on October 5, 2023.
