Officer Hurt in Crash During Security Motorcade for VP Vance

A police officer in Maryville, Tennessee, was severely hurt on Friday during a security motorcade for Vice President J.D. Vance.

The injured officer has been named as Maryville Police FTO Justin Brown, according to reports by local news.

The incident happened around 6 p.m. when Brown’s motorcycle collided with a Tennessee Highway Patrol SUV during the convoy.

The Maryville Police Department stated on social media that the collision took place on East Lamar Alexander Parkway at Merritt Road. Brown was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition after suffering serious injuries and underwent surgery early Saturday.

Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp acknowledged the quick actions of bystanders who rushed to aid the officers, highlighting their contributions in potentially saving lives.

“I can’t express enough gratitude for everyone’s rapid response that night and helping FTO Brown. You’re true heroes,” he remarked.

Emergency responders who arrived at the site handled the aftermath of the collision, as noted by local news.

A witness described to WBIR how the crash unfolded, mentioning, “I don’t know if he just wasn’t paying attention, but it seemed like the state trooper tried to make a U-turn. As soon as he turned, the motorcycle hit the side of his vehicle and went flying, landing about 15 feet away.”

Prior to the incident, reports indicate that Vance was in the area for a fundraiser. The Tennessee Highway Patrol’s Critical Incident Response Team is currently investigating the crash.

Crisp mentioned the outpouring of support for the officers involved, noting that many have sent their thoughts and prayers.

“Numerous law enforcement members from local, state, and federal levels are providing assistance and support. The City of Maryville Police Department extends its deepest thanks to everyone who has helped us during this time. Please keep FTO Brown and his family in your thoughts as well as the medical team caring for him,” the department’s message read.
