Fresno Police Video Reveals Gunfire Incident

Newly released footage from Fresno, California police shows officers responding to an unrelated call at the River Park Shopping Center around 5:30 p.m. on August 20. As they were on-site, they suddenly heard gunshots coming from the restaurant parking lot.

The restaurant involved was identified as Ruth’s Chris.

According to authorities, the video captured 18-year-old George Lewis firing shots at vehicles driving by.

As the officers rushed towards the sound of gunfire, they saw Lewis fleeing the scene. Moments later, he attempted to carjack a vehicle in the parking lot, but the driver managed to get away.

During this attempted carjacking, Lewis fired a shot, causing the car to crash, but thankfully, no one inside was hurt.

Following this, an officer pursued Lewis into the Sam’s Club parking lot. He relayed a description of the suspect along with the direction he was heading.

Shortly after that, two officers in a marked patrol car spotted Lewis running with his hand near his waistband.

It was reported that an officer then struck Lewis with the patrol car, leading to his arrest.

In the video, an officer can be heard stating, “He’s reaching!” suggesting Lewis was trying to grab a weapon just before he was taken into custody. This part of the footage starts around the 4:40 mark.

After being hit by the patrol vehicle, Lewis dropped the gun, according to police reports.

Following the incident, Lewis was transported to a hospital for treatment of leg pain and later released. He admitted to the shooting during questioning.

Authorities charged Lewis with multiple offenses, including shooting and resisting arrest. No officers were injured during the incident.

As of Monday afternoon, Fresno County Jail records indicated Lewis was still incarcerated, with a bail set at $575,000.
