Officer injured and gunman killed after shooting near CDC Global Headquarters in Georgia

Active Shooter Incident at Emory University

On August 8, 2025, Atlanta police reported that a gunman was killed following a shooting incident near Emory University. This situation put officers and the surrounding community on high alert.

The identities of both the shooter and the officers involved have not yet been disclosed.

The police confirmed that only one shooter was involved, who has since died. They emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to either the Emory campus or the neighboring areas.

The police stated, “There is no continuing threat to the Emory Campus or the surrounding area. The incident included a single shooter who is currently deceased. One law enforcement officer was injured during the response.”

According to Police Chief Dallin Siebaum, the incident was first reported around 5:45 PM local time. Officers located the shooter on the second floor of a CVS store, and initial accounts suggest that the shooter had sustained injuries. However, it remains unclear about the circumstances surrounding his injuries.

“At this point, I don’t know if it belonged to the executive or if it was self-harm,” Siebaum remarked.

Law enforcement sources mentioned that the shooter’s father called authorities earlier, expressing worries about his son’s mental state and the possibility of suicidal intentions.

The university warned students through its website to “Run, hide, fight. Avoid the area,” stressing the need for caution during the crisis.

Reports also indicated that officers did not engage with anyone directly across Clifton Avenue from the CVS. After speaking with the shooter’s family, authorities suggested that the individual might have been struggling mentally, expressing concerns linked to the COVID-19 vaccine he received.

Georgia Attorney General Chris Kerr shared his distress on social media, stating he is “terrified by the Emory University news” and is praying for the community’s safety.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens was reported to be on site as the situation unfolded.
