A police officer who was helping investigate two other shootings in Pennsylvania was shot and critically injured early Thursday morning, authorities said.

The shooting in Scranton occurred around 4:30 a.m., and a suspect was also injured, according to state police. Both men were treated at a hospital and were listed in serious but stable condition, but no further details regarding their injuries were released.

The injured officer was one of several Scranton officers investigating two other shootings in the city earlier in the evening, according to State Police Maj. Mike Carroll. That's what it means. Carroll said there was an exchange of gunfire when officers encountered the suspect, but did not provide further details.
The names of the police officer and the injured suspect have not been released. No other injuries were reported.

Carroll said the officer-involved shooting and all previous shootings are believed to be connected to gang-related activity in Scranton and the surrounding area and are not random occurrences. He said no. He did not provide details about the earlier shooting, but said no victims had been found as of Thursday afternoon.
