On Monday, a group of New York City Police Department officers found themselves under siege—by snowballs. This occurred while they were responding to a report of a rowdy gathering.
According to an NYPD spokesperson, officers were sent to Washington Square Park shortly after 4 p.m. to handle the situation. Upon arrival, they were met by a sizeable crowd launching snowballs, with some officers even hit in the face.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch addressed the incident on social media, saying, “We are aware of a specific video taken earlier today showing someone attacking a police officer. This behavior is both shameful and criminal, and our detectives are currently investigating.”
Several officers were taken to the hospital for treatment, but thankfully, they are reported to be in stable condition. So far, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
The New York City Police Benevolent Association described the incident as “unacceptable and outrageous,” emphasizing that this is the type of environment officers encounter. They demand that those responsible be found, arrested, and prosecuted for assaulting a police officer. A unified call has been made for city leaders to condemn such acts.
The Detectives Endowment Association added its voice, criticizing the behavior of the individuals who threw snowballs. Their president, Scott Munroe, stressed that the situation was not harmless fun, but a serious attack on law enforcement. He urged Mayor Zoran Mamdani and District Attorney Bragg to ensure accountability for those involved.
“No one gets a free pass for such actions,” Munroe asserted. He highlighted the dedication of detectives to identify and apprehend those responsible, insisting that officers deserve safety, protection, and respect in their line of work.
As of early Tuesday, Mayor Mamdani had not commented on the snowball incident, but other city leaders have expressed their outrage. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis characterized the attack as shameful, urging all elected officials to stand up for the police.
Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo echoed the sentiments, denouncing the incident as “disgraceful” and criticizing the mayor for setting a negative tone regarding police.
Former NYPD Commissioner John Chell labeled the occurrence an “absolute disgrace,” commending the officers for standing their ground despite being outnumbered. He also anticipated a strong condemnation from the mayor.
Overall, the incident at Washington Square Park has sparked considerable discussion around the treatment of police officers and the responsibility of public figures to address violence against law enforcement. Responses continue to pour in as the investigation unfolds.
