Concerns Over Medicaid Fraud in North Carolina’s Autism Treatment Program

Officials in North Carolina recently raised alarms about possible fraudulent activities within the state’s Medicaid program for autism therapy.

State Auditor Dave Boreek mentioned an ongoing investigation into what appears to be an astounding 47,000 percent rise in autism treatment billing. This situation was highlighted by reports from Fox News.

Boreek expressed concerns, stating:

These services are crucial for individuals needing treatment. However, when North Carolina’s billing jumps from $1.4 million to over $660 million annually for autism treatment within a five-year span, it necessitates a thorough audit to prevent misuse of taxpayer funds. So, we really had to look into that, you know?

This announcement comes shortly after Breitbart News detailed the efforts of Vice President J.D. Vance’s Task Force to Combat Fraud, which is tackling this significant issue affecting many Americans.

A representative for the vice president indicated to Breitbart News: “We have mobilized the entire Trump administration to eliminate fraud and ensure taxpayer dollars are returned to the American people. The task force is gaining traction daily, diligently working to achieve results in fighting fraud.”

Interestingly, Boreek noted that his office is collaborating with Vance’s efforts to minimize financial waste.

In July, over 85 autism clinics in Minnesota were reportedly scrutinized for Medicaid fraud amounting to tens of millions of dollars, according to Breitbart News.

Earlier, in March, the House Energy and Commerce Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee held hearings addressing fraud in Medicare and Medicaid, which are costing taxpayers billions each year.

“Fraud is widespread in many healthcare sectors, particularly in taxpayer-funded programs meant for vulnerable groups like the elderly, disabled, children, and pregnant women,” the committee stated in their public hearing notice. “Every stolen dollar from government healthcare programs represents a loss in quality care for those in greatest need.”

On Monday, President Donald Trump took action by signing an executive order to set up a federal task force led by Vice President J.D. Vance to investigate benefits fraud.

In a recent report by WFMY, a treatment provider linked to Boreek announced it has settled following a Medicaid fraud probe.

The report mentioned, “North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson disclosed a $584,143 settlement with Crossroads Treatment Center in Greensboro after a joint investigation with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of North Carolina.”

Additionally, Boreek emphasized that authorities are eager to tackle fraud, noting, “Every dollar wasted can’t be allocated to those genuinely in need of services.”
