Incident in New York Involving Shots Fired at Delivery Driver
A troubling incident unfolded in New York where a local official allegedly shot at a food delivery driver. The confrontation arose after the driver sought directions from Chester’s official.
John J. Riley III, 48, faces serious charges including first-degree assault and a firearms violation. He’s said to be an elected highway supervisor and also a federally licensed firearms dealer. The encounter reportedly occurred on May 2, when the driver’s phone ran out of battery, leading him to seek guidance from residents in the area.
Footage from doorbell cameras captured the shocking events. Reports indicate that Riley exited his home, fired a warning shot, and shouted at the driver to “Go!” Unfortunately, as the driver attempted to flee, Riley allegedly fired at him again, striking him in the back. The young man, who is believed to be a West African immigrant, was heard on another camera pleading for help before collapsing at home shortly after.
New York State Police Captain Joseph Korek expressed concern over the situation, stating, “There’s nothing to show that the victim has any eerie intentions. He was just doing his job and was about to deliver food.”
Describing the distressing encounter, the driver’s family noted that he approached Riley’s residence asking, “Is this your order?” Instead of assistance, the driver found himself being shot at after Riley ordered him to leave.
The family shared that the driver was terrified, believing his life was in danger during the incident. Riley is currently being held at the Orange County Jail, with bail set at $500,000. Despite facing these serious charges, he appears unwilling to resign from his post. Chester Town Manager Brandon Halldridge mentioned that the future of Riley as highway superintendent is not under the town board’s control at this time.
The New York State Police are taking charge of the investigation, following the local Chester Police Department’s decision to step back from the case.
