Miller-Meeks and Redfield Discuss COVID-19 Lab Leak Theory

On Tuesday, at The Heritage Foundation, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks from Iowa and former CDC Director Robert Redfield shared insights into how health officials and President Joe Biden’s administration appeared to downplay the COVID-19 lab leak theory.

Miller-Meeks stated that the administration seemed to start with a predetermined conclusion, rather than seriously considering the theory of a “spillover” outbreak. She expressed her bewilderment, saying, “Either I was stupid, and everyone else was vastly more intelligent, or there’s a reluctance to share information.” She emphasized that scientific debate, especially regarding the virus’s origins, should have been encouraged instead of suppressed.

In her view, she remarked, “Science is more of a hypothesis—it’s a process. You conduct studies, reach conclusions and confirm them through repetition. It’s not merely about consensus.”

Redfield contributed by stating that nearly every public health decision made in the initial six months of the pandemic was fundamentally flawed. He expressed his surprise at the overall lack of scientific understanding regarding pandemics, noting that a narrative quickly formed that either one adhered to or was sidelined.

Miller-Meeks, also an ophthalmologist and former head of the Iowa Department of Public Health, served on the COVID-19 subcommittee during the peak of the pandemic. With Republicans in the minority, she advocated for the continuation of the committee to pursue answers that had eluded them under Democratic leadership as elections approached in 2022.

Following the Republicans gaining control in the 2022 midterms, Miller-Meeks took the helm of the subcommittee. She personally witnessed controversial testimony from former health advisors, including Anthony Fauci and Peter Daszak, who attempted to prevent the release of emails via Freedom of Information Act requests.

Through the subcommittee’s pursuits, she observed an increasing public skepticism of government officials handling COVID-19 under Biden, attributing a significant part of this distrust to the suppression of the lab leak theory. She mentioned, “Those who questioned gain of function research are now theorizing it was a lab leak rather than a natural occurrence. We still lack access to numerous scientific papers that were initially available and then removed by the Biden administration.”

Miller-Meeks highlighted crucial information that came to light when Republicans regained control of the House, which included insights about China’s activities and intentions, research on gain of function, and what the Chinese Communist Party was doing with DNA.

Redfield supported her claims, noting that long-standing government health officials had concealed information about China while marginalizing other scientists, including himself, during the Biden administration. He stated that he was not included in key decision-making discussions and only learned of certain meetings through the Freedom of Information Act.

“I was surprised to discover that they held discussions on February 1 with a select group of scientists, none of whom included me,” he recounted. “I found out about it only later, through the Freedom of Information Act.”
