Sen. John Cornyn Urges IOC to Ban Biological Males in Women’s Sports
On Monday, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) sent a letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), pushing for a more stringent ban on biological males from participating in women’s sports. This comes as the IOC is expected to introduce new guidelines that would prevent transgender female athletes from competing with biological women, particularly focusing on individuals who have differences in sexual development (DSD).
Cornyn addressed IOC president Kirsty Coventry, highlighting that while a move toward a total ban on biological males in women’s competitions is in progress, it isn’t yet official. He stated, “I call on the IOC to act swiftly and establish clear policies to protect fair competition for women.” The senator underscored that ensuring the integrity of women’s sports is crucial, especially with the Winter Olympics around the corner and the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles approaching.
“With the Winter Olympics set to take place in February and preparations for the 2028 Summer Olympics already in motion, prompt action is critical,” he remarked. “This issue has developed into a global concern regarding sports integrity.”
Additionally, Cornyn referenced former President Trump’s Executive Order 1420, which aimed at preserving women’s sports for biological females. He concluded by urging the IOC to finalize the ban on biological males without delay.
The expected announcement of this new policy is anticipated in February, shortly before the Winter Games. Coventry has previously stated that there was substantial support from IOC members for protecting the women’s category and ensuring fairness in competitions.
While there are various factors across different sports, she emphasized, “To ensure fairness, we must prioritize the protection of the women’s category first and foremost.”
