Officials flush homeless Californians out of furnished caves hidden along river

Governor Gavin Newsom's California leads the nation in homelessness rates. Last month, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
revealed The Democratic-controlled state is home to at least 28% of the nation's homeless population, or about 181,3999 people. HUD also noted that 123,423 people in the state are “not evacuated.”

Some Californians have literally gone underground to avoid being counted in the second group.

Modesto authorities recently evicted homeless people who were living in several elaborately furnished caves along the Tuolumne River. Some of the caves carved into the cliffs along the river were located about 20 feet below unsuspecting motorists and quiet areas.

“They're building some interesting caves,” Brian Brandenburg, a nearby resident who walks along the river with his dog, told KXTV-TV. “Honestly, I started laughing when I told them how creative they were.”

Photos taken inside the cave show a silty ceiling laminated with plastic sheets. painted walls. Bedding covered with blankets and a nook for sleeping. table. ornaments. and a shelving unit.

Neighborhood resident Tracy Rojas said:
Said KOVR-TV reported that drugs and weapons were also found in the cave.

“We know it's dangerous, but they're operating in bad weather,” Brandenburg said. “What's more dangerous? Freezing or starving or living in a cave? They'd know how to build it, and they'd know how sturdy it would be.”

Admitting the residence was illegal, structurally unsound and filled with filth, authorities were forced to take action over the weekend. The Modesto Police Department worked with volunteer groups from the local community to clean up areas particularly riddled with “tramps and illegal camps.”

Troglodytes living underground around Crater Avenue and Dallas Street were notified well in advance of the sweep, police said. The Modesto Police Department's Community Medical Assistance Team also reportedly provided transition assistance to those in the cave.

Cleanup crews ultimately found and disposed of 7,600 pounds of trash, along with two truckloads and a trash trailer.

KXTV reported that cleanup crews eventually discovered eight caves, some as wide as 10 feet.

Barricades were then erected to prevent people from returning to the cave.

Upon request, city staff will provide information and resources to interested parties,” the City of Modesto said in a statement. You can.” We need shelter and social services. ”

“The City recognizes the importance of not only addressing the immediate safety risks, but also working toward a comprehensive solution to permanently remove these caves. Our Commitment “We will continue to work diligently to overcome this situation, taking into account the structural safety of the surrounding area.” City.

This is not the first time vagrants have created tunnels and caves in the area in recent years. After Modesto discovers a dangerous shelter dug into an embankment,
cleaned up Riverside in 2022.

“You can't stop it with a fence or something,” said Sean Cissemir, who lives nearby.
Said Kovr. “Give them a place to live.”
