Federal Inquiry into Unsolicited Pizza Deliveries to Lawmakers
Federal officials are looking into the peculiar situation of unwanted pizza deliveries made to the homes of Congressional members. According to both current and former leaders from the Capitol Police, deliveries have been received by lawmakers from both major parties. Authorities express concern that these anonymous deliveries could have menacing intents.
One Capitol Police spokesperson remarked, “These recent pizza deliveries have been a nuisance, highlighting the increasingly perilous environment we find ourselves in. Acts of violence and intimidation against elected officials won’t be tolerated.”
Capitol Police are collaborating with federal, state, and local agencies to tackle this issue.
Interestingly, many of these deliveries occurred amid an ongoing manhunt for a suspect involved in the shootings of two Minnesota Assemblymen and the subsequent search for the gunman. However, it’s worth noting that the pizza deliveries started before the Minnesota incident that tragically claimed the lives of former state legislator Melissa Hortman and her husband.
Authorities noted that this gunman, identified as Vance Belter, had a manifesto that included the names of around 70 individuals, primarily targeting lawmakers and advocates of abortion rights. The list alarmingly featured Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, as well as Representatives Ilhan Omar and Kelly Morrison.
Belter, 57, was apprehended in a rural area near Minneapolis over the weekend.
“It’s quite unsettling,” said a congressional insider to ABC News regarding the pizza deliveries that caught the attention of House security due to concerns of weapons. “People can be really frightening.”
Over recent years, numerous public officials have reported receiving anonymous pizza deliveries, prompting law enforcement to warn that the senders seem to be aware of their home addresses.
