Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine Signs Emergency Order Banning Child Transition Surgeries

On Friday, Ohio Republican Gov. Mike DeWine signed an “emergency” executive order banning transition-related surgeries for children.

Mr. DeWine previously vetoed the original bill, titled the SAFE Act, which would have prohibited doctors from prescribing cross-sex hormones or puberty-blocking drugs to children. This law also prohibited biological males from participating in women's sports.

Under the new law, doctors will be prohibited from performing gender reassignment surgeries, such as mastectomies and hysterectomies, on children at hospitals and medical facilities across the state.

“It's been a week and I still feel as solid today as I did that day,” DeWine said at a news conference Friday, defending his decision to veto the sweeping ban. . “I believe parents, not the government, should make these important decisions for their children.”

But Republican presidential candidates and conservative activists denounced DeWine's veto and called on the Republican-controlled Ohio General Assembly to override it. national review report.

Former college swimmer Riley Gaines also criticized DeWine for taking too long to veto the bill, starting Dec. 15, after it passed the Republican Congress.

As part of his veto, DeWine joined several people who have sidestepped transgender issues, including former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who in 2021 vetoed a ban on gender-based medicalization of minors. He joined Republican governors. Meanwhile, Utah Governor Spencer Cox and Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb rejected the veto. Their state's trans-athlete bill will be introduced in 2022.
