A group of Ohio State Assembly members of Congress are pushing for NASA headquarters to be moved from Washington, D.C. to Cleveland.
Lawmakers argued in a letter Tuesday to Vice President Vance, who is from Ohio, who claimed that Jared Isaacman is Trump's pick to lead NASA and that moving the space agency headquarters would serve as “an important opportunity to strengthen effectiveness, efficiency and fiscal responsibility.”
“Please note that NASA is quietly evaluating potential alternatives to the current headquarters location. The expiration of the upcoming lease in 2028 will provide the best moment for strategic change.” The lawmaker wrote.
The letter was signed by Ohio GOP officials Max Miller, Troy Balderson, Mike Carrey, Warren Davidson, Jim Jordan, Dave Joyce, Bob Latta, Michael Ruri, Dave Taylor, Mike Turner and Democrat Mercy Capter. Ohio Sens. Bernie Moreno (R) and John Husted (R) also signed the letter.
This letter comes amidst the dramatic changes in agencies and sectors across the federal government. As part of a surge in action, the Trump administration is pushing for the transfer of several businesses and workers from DC, including addressing education and law enforcement.
On Tuesday, the Department of Education revealed that it was firing nearly half of its workforce, one of the administration's latest major cuts.
In their letter, Ohio lawmakers argued that they justified moving NASA headquarters to Buckeye State and saved taxpayer money, “consistent with broader efforts to reside in federal agencies and revitalize areas outside the Beltway.”
“Ohio is the birthplace of aviation, the heart of the American aerospace industry and an important hub for advanced technology, research and manufacturing. Placement of NASA HQ at the 'centre of everything' will strengthen national leadership in space exploration and aviation innovation,” the letter reads.
