An Ohio sheriff recently offered to send illegal immigrants to Americans who have Harris-Waltz signs in their yards.
Portage County Sheriff Bruce Zukowski is facing criticism from some local residents for comments he made on his campaign account over the weekend.
“Elections have consequences.”
Zukowski wrote: “When people ask me… I reply… what would happen if the flipping laughing hyena won??… write down the addresses of all the people who have her signs in their yards!”
“So… when the illegal human 'locusts' (which she supports!) need a place to live… we'll already know their address. [sic] “New families who supported their arrival!” he added.
The sheriff's post also touched on the immigration crisis affecting Springfield, Ohio, and Aurora, Colorado. The Springfield area, once home to 60,000 residents, has seen an influx of roughly 20,000 Haitian immigrants. The towns have reported an increase in traffic accidents and higher housing costs due to the new arrivals.
Zukowski, who has served as sheriff since 2021, is currently seeking re-election.
While some Portage County residents found Zukowski's comments amusing, others filed complaints against the sheriff for alleged voter intimidation. Akron Beacon Journal Reported.
One resident told news outlets that they had filed a complaint with the Department of Justice, writing, “This kind of personal information leak authorized by a man with a gun and a badge is truly frightening.”
Other residents have reportedly called on the Ohio Secretary of State to open an investigation into the sheriff's comments.
“The comments made on Facebook were intended to oppress, intimidate and stifle free speech,” another local resident told the Akron Beacon Journal.
Zukowski's opponent, John Barbour, also reportedly argued that the sheriff's comments amounted to voter intimidation.
“Right now, it's like we're deciding whether or not to protect people who don't share our views,” Barber said. “I really hope that the sheriff's office isn't looking at voter registrations before proposing to send personnel, but people have a right to question that.”
The Portage County Republican Party has endorsed Zukowski, telling the news outlet, “We think the sheriff's statement is a bit of an artistic expression to get closer to the fundamental belief that elections have consequences.”
“Our sheriff is elected to represent the people of our county, and Bruce Zukowski represents Portage County,” the spokesman said.
Zukowski did not respond to various requests for comment. news Outlet.
