Let’s follow suit, America!
In the past two seasons in college football, one Ohio State football game has been streamed on Peacock exclusively, and a lawmaker in The Buckeye State is trying to make sure it doesn’t happen thrice.
A Democrat out of Columbus, State Sen. Bill DeMora is looking to slap a ban on Ohio State football games being on just one streaming service. And not only is this bill for the Buckeyes, it’s for all college football programs across the state of Ohio.
A graduate of Ohio State University, DeMora has introduced a piece of legislation called Senate Bill 94. The aim of the bill is to stop state colleges from inking deals with media brands that would give them exclusive rights on games. “To the extent permitted by federal law, no state university shall enter into or renew a contract under which the media rights to broadcast a university athletic event are granted exclusively to a streaming service. This division applies only to contracts entered into or renewed on or after the effective date of this section,” reads the proposed legislation, per NBC 4i.
And DeMora made it very clear: The bill stems from his frustrations of being forced to sign up for a streaming platform to watch his beloved Buckeyes.
“It was the first time in over 20 years that I couldn’t watch an Ohio State football game on a regular channel,” said DeMora. “I refuse to pay all these streaming networks to watch Ohio State and other sports … Streaming television is not good for sports.”
