Ohio University drops John Hauser's name as new coach in college football

Ohio Bobcats Name John Hauser as Head Coach

The Ohio Bobcats have officially appointed John Hauser as their new head coach, following his role as interim coach.

Hauser steps into this position after the dismissal of Brian Smith, who was let go due to allegations of inappropriate conduct, including drinking at the office and an affair with a student. Smith had been placed on leave in December and was terminated shortly after for serious professional misconduct.

Recently, Hauser guided the Bobcats to a 17-10 win over UNLV in the Frisco Bowl, marking a significant achievement for the team. Just days after this victory, he received the formal title of head coach.

“We are thrilled to have John Hauser take the helm as our head football coach,” stated Slade Larscheid, the Director of Athletics at Ohio University. “John’s commitment to nurturing our team during this crucial time has been apparent since he arrived in 2022.”

Larscheid praised Hauser’s contributions, noting that under his watch, Ohio State football has achieved 40 wins over the past four seasons. He emphasized Hauser’s focus on enhancing the student-athlete experience, both on and off the field, expressing anticipation for what the future holds for Bobcat football.

Hauser began his time at Ohio State in 2022 as the safeties coach. He climbed the ranks quickly, becoming the defensive passing game coordinator in 2023, and was promoted to defensive coordinator before the 2024 season. This season, he also served as associate head coach, making him the 31st coach in the program’s history.

Expressing gratitude, Hauser remarked, “I am thankful to President Lori Gonzalez and Director of Athletics Slade Larscheid for giving me this chance to lead the team. I appreciate the support from our players, alumni, and fans, which means so much to Ohio University.”

Hauser further emphasized his pride in being part of the community and his commitment to upholding the program’s legacy as they prepare for the upcoming season.
