Ohioans resort to leaf blowers, snowplows to clear mayflies

Call the SWAT team.

Residents in Ohio have turned to leaf-blowing machines to rid their lakeside town of dead mayflies after they infested the area.

Millions of dead insects have piled up on driveways and in driveways across Port Clinton, leaving residents with no choice but to treat them like fallen leaves.

“It got blown away and it’s still there because somebody ran over it,” Blake Wellman said Monday in a video he recorded blowing the bugs off the grounds of his store.

“I’ve already been through here and cleared the snow off the windows, so it’s not too bad, but it’ll probably be just as bad tomorrow.”

Another neighbor, Billy Rigoni, owner of Northern Exposure Candle Co., took bug cleanup a step further, using a snowblower to scoop the flies off his property. 13 ABC reported.

“Sunday night we had probably the worst swarm we’ve had in a while, an invasion of trillions of bees,” Port Clinton Mayor Mike Snyder told the outlet.

Snyder said charter boat captains typically let the city know when mayfly eggs are likely to hatch on the lake, giving utility FirstEnergy enough time to turn off street lights that attract the swarms.

“Unfortunately, we missed it by a day,” Snyder said.

Mayfly infestations have been intense this spring, but their overwhelming numbers appear to already be starting to decline.

The creatures do not bite or sting, and as adults they only live for about a day.
