A student at the University of Oklahoma, Samantha Hrunecki, claims she was unfairly graded for an assignment on gender norms due to her Christian beliefs. Hrunecki, an associate medical student, received a score of zero out of 25 after submitting her thoughts on an article discussing gender stereotypes and mental health in children.
In her essay, Hrunecki expressed that traditional gender roles should be reinforced rather than diminished, referencing her understanding of gender from a biblical perspective. She argued that differences between men and women are intentional and created by God, stating that to alter these roles is harmful. Hrunecki highlighted her belief that women naturally gravitate toward traditionally feminine roles and men to masculine ones.
She criticized her peers for conforming to modern views on gender, calling them “sneaky and dishonest.” The essay also included biblical references, emphasizing that societal claims about multiple genders are misleading and detrimental to youth.
Despite adhering to the assignment’s requirement to express her opinions on the article, Hrunecki received harsh feedback from the teaching assistant, Mel Kurth, who described her work as “disgusting” and lacking empathy. Kurth pointed out that Hrunecki’s lack of empirical evidence contradicted the requirements, although the grading criteria didn’t specify this.
Hrunecki contested her grade, asserting that her beliefs were integral to her response. Following her complaint, the university initiated a review and stated they take First Amendment rights seriously. They promised measures to prevent academic harm caused by grading and placed Kurth on administrative leave during the investigation.
Hrunecki remarked that conservative perspectives often face pushback in educational settings and expressed skepticism about the university’s sincerity. She felt the administration’s response was largely influenced by public attention rather than genuine concern.
Her experience garnered both support and criticism online, and she urged fellow students to stand firm in their beliefs, no matter the backlash, asserting the importance of honesty over conforming opinions. She conveyed a compassionate message to Kurth, wishing understanding despite their differences.
Neither Kurth nor the university provided additional comments on the situation.
