Operation Guardian: Oklahoma’s Deportation Initiative

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol, in collaboration with ICE agents, recently apprehended 120 undocumented immigrants during a significant operation at a port of entry close to the Texas border. This effort, dubbed Operation Guardian, was initiated by Governor Kevin Stitt alongside the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, with an aim of managing illegal immigration more effectively.

The operation revealed some alarming safety issues. Authorities found that many commercial drivers did not possess valid licenses. In fact, during the operation along Interstate 40, they encountered over 500 individuals, and 120 were identified for deportation, according to officials.

Interestingly, the Department of Public Safety commented on the troubling findings, highlighting potential dangers on the roads. Some licenses had been expired for nearly a decade or were registered under questionable names, complicating identification processes. “You don’t really have a minor crash with a truck that’s, what, 80,000 pounds cruising at 70 mph?” said Tipton, raising valid concerns.

Currently, Oklahoma imprisons about 525 undocumented individuals, costing taxpayers around $36,000 daily. The plan points out that a significant portion of these inmates are involved in serious crimes. To elaborate, approximately 30% of these offenses include violent crimes against children, while 20% relate to violent assaults. Notably, about 72% of these offenders are from Mexico, followed by those from Guatemala, Honduras, and Vietnam.

Governor Stitt emphasized that the purpose of this operation is to transition undocumented offenders directly from state and county institutions to federal deportation proceedings. He asserted that this move addresses what he views as years of neglect from federal authorities. “The leniency of the previous administration’s border policies has turned our country into a safe haven for dangerous illegal immigrants,” Stitt stated, vowing to change this narrative in Oklahoma.

The plan aims to enhance the existing ICE agreements, granting state and local authorities the power to detain and transfer offenders more efficiently. Furthermore, for cases where deportation orders are already in place, non-citizen prisoners can be sent to federal custody without delay.

Tipton stressed that this initiative is not just about immigration; it’s fundamentally about ensuring the safety of families and communities. “Through Operation Guardian, Oklahoma is poised to lead the nation in confronting illegal aliens who threaten our public safety,” he claimed, illustrating a commitment to protecting the state’s residents from crime. Overall, it seems like a multifaceted approach aimed at tackling a complex issue.
