Oldest living survivor of Pearl Harbor attack dies at 105

Warren Upton, the oldest survivor of the Pearl Harbor attack, has died at the age of 105.

Upton died Wednesday at a hospital in Los Gatos, California. Kathleen Farley, California president of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors, said he had pneumonia. Associated Press.

Upton was the last survivor of the USS Utah. The battleship was at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese bombed a naval base in Hawaii on December 7, 1941.

This attack thrust the United States into World War II.

Upton died shortly after 1983.rd anniversary of the attack.

Democrats and Republicans came together earlier this month to remember the surviving veterans and those killed in the attacks.

President Biden shared his thoughts online, paying tribute to the Americans who died and the service members who went on to serve our country at war.

“Let us remember them and carry on their mission to build a better future for humanity,” Biden said.

In 2020, Upton said in an interview with The Associated Press that he started shaving decades ago when he felt the first torpedo hit a battleship. A second torpedo hit the ship and it began to capsize.

Upton, then 22, swam ashore to Ford Island and hid to avoid Japanese planes. He said he was upset to have lost so many surviving crew members over the years.

After Upton's death, there were only 15 survivors of the Pearl Harbor attack, according to the Associated Press.
