Oldest Living Survivor Of Pearl Harbor Attack Passes Away At 105

Warren Upton, the oldest survivor of Japan's infamous 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor and the last survivor of the USS Utah, has died at the age of 105.

Upton died Wednesday at a hospital in Los Gatos, Calif., after a battle with pneumonia, said Kathleen Farley, California president of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors.

The USS Utah was stationed at Pearl Harbor when Japanese aircraft began bombing the Hawaiian naval base in the early hours of December 7th.thThe attack in 1941 brought America into the fighting of World War II.

Upton said in an interview. Associated Press In 2020, he was preparing to shave when he felt the first torpedo hit Utah. He recalled that no one on board knew what had caused the ship to tremble. A second torpedo then hit and the ship began to heel and capsize.

Additionally, Upton said in the interview that he was comfortable talking about what happened during the attack. But what upset him was the loss of sailors over the years. By 2020, only three of Utah's crew remained alive, including himself.

According to military historian J. Michael Wenger, there were an estimated 87,000 military personnel on Oahu on the day of the fateful attack. With Upton's death, only 15 people remain alive from that tragic day.
