Ole Miss athletic director clarifies Lane Kiffin's exit to LSU

Dispute Arises Over Kiffin’s Departure

Keith Carter, the athletic director at Ole Miss, has challenged several assertions made by former head coach Lane Kiffin regarding his controversial exit to LSU.

Carter spoke publicly for the first time on Wednesday after Kiffin was named the Tigers’ new head coach. His remarks seemed to align with those of offensive lineman Brycen Sanders and other players who disputed Kiffin’s version of the events that led to his departure.

One key point of contention for Carter was when Kiffin was supposedly informed that he would not be allowed to coach Ole Miss during the College Football Playoff. “A lot of the things out there may or may not be completely accurate,” Carter commented.

Carter revealed that Kiffin and his agent were notified weeks earlier that he would essentially be ruled out from coaching the Rebels in a potential playoff game.

Interestingly, Carter indicated that he might have been open to discussing Kiffin’s possibility of coaching in Atlanta if Ole Miss had advanced to compete for its first SEC championship. “It was clear a few weeks ago that coaching in the postseason was not an option for Coach Kiffin,” he added on a show hosted by Richard Cross.

In his parting message, Kiffin mentioned that he had asked to “lead Ole Miss to the playoffs and finish his historic six seasons with the team this year.” However, Carter denied this request while noting that the team had also expressed a desire for Kiffin to remain as head coach.

Sanders quickly countered Kiffin’s account, referencing his post on social media. “‘Despite the team asking me to continue coaching,’ everyone in the room would disagree,” he wrote, although it’s worth noting that Sanders misquoted Kiffin in his remarks.

In light of Sanders’ statement, fellow offensive lineman Jaden Williams added, “Let us know. One by one.” This hints at a collective sentiment among the players about the situation.

Carter also revealed that Kiffin had informed him on Saturday night of his decision to take the job at LSU. Following this, Ole Miss promoted defensive coordinator Pete Golding to the head coach position.
