Ole Miss players resist team’s desire for Lane Kiffin to coach in the CFP

Several players from Ole Miss are countering Lane Kiffin’s assertions that they urged him to stay and coach through the College Football Playoff. This could complicate an already turbulent departure as he transitions to the head coaching position at LSU.

In his announcement on social media about accepting the LSU job, Kiffin stated that Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter denied his request to coach the team for the remainder of the season, even though he claimed the players had asked him to continue.

However, multiple current players from Ole Miss took to social media to dispute this narrative.

Offensive lineman Brycen Sanders was among the first to voice his disagreement, posting on X, “Despite the team asking me to continue coaching, everyone present would disagree,” referencing Kiffin’s original statement.

Teammate Paris Wilkins shared Sanders’ post, humorously adding, “No one told me to do this, please fax me!”

Offensive tackle Jayden Williams also chimed in, commenting on the situation, “Each one!” in a note meant for clarification.

Junior linebacker Santalin Perkins took it a step further, contesting Kiffin’s interpretation during a recent announcement. He remarked, “That’s not the message you said in the conference room. Everyone there can vouch for this.”

Kiffin has been reminding everyone post-announcement that it was Ole Miss’s decision not to have him lead the team to the end of the season. Still, it appears that there may be more to the story than just whether the players genuinely wanted him around, as he claimed.

While it’s uncertain when Ole Miss players will face reporters again, this topic is bound to generate significant discussion.

In interviews following his announcement and during his initial press conference, Kiffin expressed a hope that, over time, Ole Miss fans would come to recognize the efforts he put into the program.

Meanwhile, at the Oxford airport, some fans were ready to heckle as he departed with his entourage for Baton Rouge.

Kiffin’s portrayal of the players’ feelings about his coaching may not sit well with anyone at Mississippi State. Known for stirring up tensions during previous coaching stints, his drawn-out exit from Ole Miss might add another chapter to that narrative.
