Olivia Cook and Robin Wright are known for portraying cunning characters on TV. In Dragon’s House, Wright played Claire Underwood in Card House. Their latest venture, a series called Girlfriend on Prime Video, sees them once again exploring their darker sides as a ruthless mother and a supportive girlfriend, respectively, both determined to keep their loved ones close at any cost.

The show takes a dual perspective, showcasing events through the eyes of Laura (Wright) and Cherry (Cook). Yet, it becomes evident that neither woman is truly innocent in their attempts to safeguard Daniel (Laurie Davidson). Their tactics in separating him from others raise some eyebrows—these women are certainly not upstanding citizens.
“It felt good,” Cook noted, suggesting that audiences might end up enjoying the characters’ wickedness. “The fascinating thing about these characters is how different they are from me. It’s refreshing to dive into guilt and shame and push those feelings away.”
However, both actresses admitted that embodying their characters means setting aside any doubts about their decision-making processes. They need to connect with the women they portray, even if that connection isn’t always straightforward.
“You have to appreciate the characters you play, no matter how villainous they may be. It’s essential to understand their motivations and the reasoning behind their choices, whether it’s thinly veiled truths or outright lies,” Wright explained.
Cook mentioned that she felt distanced from the series after filming. “I can grasp both sides of the story, but when you’re actually in the moment, you have to really align with your character,” she said.
There’s definitely some questionable behavior on display. Cook’s character, for example, digs through Laura’s personal items and even sabotages her ex-boyfriend’s wedding cake. Meanwhile, Wright’s character complicates her son’s love life by misleading Cherry about Daniel’s well-being.
It all begins innocently, though. For Cherry, it starts with sneaking a peek at Laura’s clothes while spending time with Daniel.
“I think snooping is my guilty pleasure. I mean, who doesn’t love a good snoop? I might not go as far as trying on my stepmother’s outfit, but if I’m at someone’s desk, I can’t resist checking the drawers,” Cook confessed. “I just can’t help being nosy, it’s the worst!”
She also discussed a moment when her character goes a bit too far, saying, “Crossing the line? For sure, tainting a cake is pretty drastic. It brings out the worst in all of us!”
Girlfriend is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
