Olympiacos beat Fiorentina after extra time in the Europa Conference League final on Wednesday, thanks to Ayoub El Kabi’s late winner to secure the club’s first major European title.
A match that was high on intensity and physicality but low on quality in front of goal saw neither team score a goal inside 90 minutes, with El Kabbi scoring the winner in the 116th minute.
The game looked set to go into a penalty shootout but El Kabi got in front of his markman to tuck in Santiago Jaze’s cross, but players and fans were left waiting tensely for a long time for the VAR to confirm an offside before the goal was awarded.
The result marked a second consecutive defeat in the Europa Conference League final for Fiorentina, who had reached the top flight without losing a single game this season.
