Many athletes listen to mood-boosting playlists before a competition to get into competition mode.
Songs like “Till I Collapse” and “Lose Yourself” by Eminem, “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor, and “We Will Rock You” by Queen are classics that help athletes warm up.
On Friday, July 26, the 2024 Olympic Games will officially open in Paris, France. Athletes from all over the world will represent their countries in sports such as beach volleyball, basketball, hockey, tennis, swimming and gymnastics.

Ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics, here’s a look at the music athletes competing on Team USA will be listening to before competing for the gold medal.

1. Logan Edler
Logan Edler will compete in breaking, commonly known as breakdancing, at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In Olympic breaking competitions, dancers compete one-on-one, dancing to music randomly selected by a DJ, according to the Olympics website.
According to the Associated Press, Edla often listens to Malcolm McLaren’s “World’s Famous” before hitting the dance floor, having first discovered the 1983 song on an old mixtape.
“It felt like I was back when I first started breaking,” Edla told the outlet.

“I’ve found that music brings us together,” she said.
2. Daniel Roberts
Daniel Roberts is another Olympian who likes to reminisce with uplifting music.
When Roberts puts on his headphones before a hurdle race, he’ll hear old-school R&B like the O’Jays’ “Use Tha Be My Girl” playing. He told The Associated Press that he prefers listening to music for the sheer enjoyment of it, rather than pumping songs.

“If I really like the music or the song, it gives me good energy, I dance, I move my body,” he told the outlet.

3. Cordell Tinch
U.S. team hurdler Cordell Tinch likes to combine it with music.
“Today it was ‘God Did.’ That was the last song I heard before I took my headphones off,” Tinch told The Associated Press.

“Today it was that song, but another day it might be a different song,” he said, noting that he sometimes chooses Broadway hits.
4. Mackenzie Cohan
Mackenzie Coan competed in the Paralympics in 2012, 2016 and 2020, winning four gold medals and two silver medals.

She will return to the Olympics in 2024 as a member of the swimming team.
Before she gets in the water, she often listens to Britney Spears songs, specifically “Circus” and “Womanizer.”

She told The Associated Press that she has a Spotify playlist full of songs to get her in the mood before a competition.
“There are some songs I can’t listen to unless I’m getting ready for a race because it gets me so worked up,” she says. “I can’t stand it. I listen to songs that are really fun and get me moving.”
5. Rye Benjamin
Rye Benjamin is a professional hurdler and sprinter.

Olympians don’t have a favorite song or artist they listen to to get in the mood.

Benjamin told The Associated Press that he often favors artists like Drake and G. Herbo, but sometimes he also likes to listen to film scores like “Interstellar” and “The King.”
6. Rachel Glenn
According to Team USA, Rachel Glenn is an Olympic track and field athlete currently competing in the 400-meter hurdles and high jump.

Her warm-up songs are often upbeat hits.
According to the Associated Press, artists she listens to include Snoop Dogg, Soulja Boy, Lil Vada and Tommy the Clown.
“I like to listen to music wherever I go,” she says, “even when I’m doing my homework or trying to sleep. Music is very important. Athletics is a mental thing. If I’m in the right mental state, I’ll perform well.”

7. Veronica Fraley
Another track and field athlete who enjoys upbeat tunes to get in the mood before a competition is Veronica Fraley.

Fraley, who will be competing in the discus throw, told The Associated Press that he chooses rap music like Future’s “March Madness” right before a competition, adding that music really helps him focus.
“This song helps me bring out my strongest energy,” she told the outlet.
8. Samantha Bosco
Samantha Bosco is a Paralympic cyclist.
When she trains for a competition, there are two songs she always chooses to play.

Her favorite songs are “I Am Here” by Pink and “Chant” by Macklemore and Tones and I.

According to Team USA, Bosco was born with right tibial posterior varus and calcaneal valgus, which were surgically corrected when he was 4 years old.
Bosco has won two bronze medals.
9. Jaedyn Blackwell
Jaydin Blackwell is a Paralympic sprinter born in Little Rock, Arkansas, but moved to Michigan before he turned one and grew up there, according to the U.S. team.

Blackwell was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of six.
Music isn’t Blackwell’s go-to, but rather motivational speeches that she listens to before competitions.
According to the Associated Press, Blackwell’s favorite speech to listen to is the introduction to Madden NFL 13, which features a quote from Ray Lewis.

According to the media, ultramarathon runner David Goggins is also one of the artists he frequently listens to.
10. Chase Budinger
Chase Budinger’s journey from the beach volleyball court to the Olympics has been an interesting one.

The 6-foot-7 athlete officially entered the NBA when he was selected 44th overall by the Detroit Pistons in the 2009 draft.
As an NBA player, he played for the Houston Rockets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Indiana Pacers and Phoenix Suns.
Now, Budinger has left the basketball court and is playing professional beach volleyball on the sand, where his current teammate is Miles Evans.

When it comes to his playlists, Budinger typically sticks to the classics, with Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” being his favorite song, according to USA Today.
11. Daniella Moroz
According to Team USA, Daniella Moroz is an American sailor who was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area.

According to USA Today, one of Moroz’s favorite songs to listen to before competing is Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well (10-minute version).”
She also chose “All Star” by Smash Mouth.
12. Minna Steth
Minna Steth is a skateboarder who will represent the United States at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

According to USA Today, Stress’ playlist is packed with an eclectic range of songs, including some she considers “joke songs.”
