Greg Luganis Begins New Chapter Overseas
Olympic diving legend Greg Luganis is making a significant life change, having sold three properties in California as well as his cherished Olympic medals. This move marks an ambitious new beginning for him, as he relocates to Panama.
At 65, Luganis, celebrated as one of the greatest divers of all time, has expressed a need for financial support as he transitions to this new phase. He recently revealed his decision to auction two gold medals and a silver medal from his Olympic career.
In a Facebook post, he shared, “As life moves forward, what are you ready to leave behind?” Reflecting on his age, he remarked, “I’m no longer the person I thought I was.”
Between 1976 and 1988, Luganis earned a total of five Olympic medals. Through his auction, he received a significant amount—over $437,000—for those medals. He highlighted the reality of needing money, stating that while many might have sold businesses for profit, his medals held immense personal value.
“I auctioned off three of the medals because I disagreed with the so-called ‘experts’ during my last attempt,” he wrote. “I just needed the funds.”
Luganis also mentioned selling his home, feeling positive about the new owners and their plans for it. He expressed a heartfelt sentiment towards the house, hoping it would bring joy and peace to its new inhabitants.
In addition to his medals and home, Luganis noted that some friends sold their belongings after losing everything in a devastating wildfire earlier this year. He acknowledged the strength in their resilience, saying it inspires him to embrace new beginnings with an open heart.
“I often felt constrained, playing small for the comfort of others,” he reflected. “Now, I’m starting to realize what I could truly achieve.”
Luganis emphasized that his move to Panama will be a journey of self-discovery. “Can I find out who I am without the usual distractions?” he asked, sharing his goal of exploring forgiveness and nurturing his spirit through life’s experiences.
Throughout his legendary career, which included competitions in Montreal, Los Angeles, and Seoul, Luganis won four gold medals and one silver. Notably, he remains the only athlete to have consecutive Olympic titles in both springboard and platform diving.
After his retirement, Luganis took on roles in commentary, acting, and motivational speaking. He publicly came out as gay in 1994, revealing shortly after that he was living with HIV.
