Laura Dahlmeier Tragically Passes Away at 31
Laura Dahlmeier, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, has sadly died at the age of 31 following a mountain climbing accident. This incident occurred earlier this week.
The German biathlon athlete was hit by a falling rock while climbing in the Karakoram Mountains of northern Pakistan.
Initial rescue efforts were hindered by poor weather and the danger of further rock falls, making it very difficult to reach her in that isolated location.
The news of Dahlmeier’s passing has left many in the Olympic community in shock. It’s hard to find the words; she loved the mountains.
Laura made headlines during the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics, where she became the first female biathlon athlete to win both a sprint and a pursuit gold medal in the same games. Her legacy will certainly live on.
According to her management, the tragic accident took place at an altitude nearing 19,000 feet.
As reported by a spokesperson for the Pakistani government, locals were the ones who managed to recover her from the landslide area.
Dahlmeier had surprisingly retired from professional competition in 2019, citing a lack of passion for the sport. Reflecting on this decision, she mentioned, “After many challenging seasons filled with ups and downs, I just didn’t feel the 100% passion I needed for professional sports anymore.”
She made history at the 2018 Winter Olympics, not just for her golds but also for winning a bronze medal in the individual 15km event. Over her career, she secured seven world championship titles.
