Scott Hamilton Prepares for Benefit Concert Amid Cancer Journey
Scott Hamilton, the celebrated ice skater and Olympic gold medalist, is gearing up for another benefit concert, Scott Hamilton & Friends. This event aims to support his CARES Foundation, which focuses on innovative cancer treatments.
Hamilton, who first battled testicular cancer in 1997, is feeling optimistic about this year’s concert. He describes it as possibly the “most epic” yet, featuring famous vocalists from bands like Loverboy, Chicago, Journey, Kansas, and REO Speedwagon. He expressed excitement about the impressive lineup during a recent conversation.
The funds raised will directly aid the CARES Foundation, which partners with cancer research centers to find treatments that minimize harm to patients. Hamilton explained that past treatments, including chemotherapy and radiation, often caused long-term damage—something he hopes to change through more effective approaches like immunotherapy and proton therapy.
Reflecting on his own health experiences, Hamilton shared, “Life is great. I am fully alive, healthy, and without limitations.” He also acknowledged the reality of needing medication for life, yet maintained a humorous perspective—remarking that nearly everyone ends up taking some form of medication at some point.
Hamilton’s battle with health issues has not been easy. After undergoing surgery and chemotherapy in the late ’90s, he later faced two brain tumors, one of which was removed, while the other, although benign, recurred in 2016. Remarkably, he opted against surgery this time, highlighting a more cautious approach.
The four-time U.S. Figure Skating champion remains hopeful about advancements in cancer treatment, expressing his belief that one day no one will die from cancer. He shared, “At 67 years old, I may not have many decades left, but I believe that day will come.”
Born in Ohio, Hamilton began skating at the tender age of nine. His journey has been filled with challenges, but his optimism and commitment to cancer research continue to shine through.
