Olympic gold medalist Croix Bethune out for rest of NWSL season, week after tossing first pitch at MLB game

Croix-Bethune will miss the remainder of the National Women's Soccer League season.

The 23-year-old was selected by the Washington Spirit in January's NWSL Draft and has five goals and 10 assists in 17 games this season, and took to the mound to throw the ceremonial first pitch before the Washington Nationals-New York Yankees game late last month.

Bethune appeared to grimaced slightly as he came off the mound.

A week later, the Spirit announced the rookie tore the meniscus in her knee “out of practice.” She will rehab the injury but is not expected to be back in time to play in the final nine games of the 2024 season.

Bethune did not travel with the team for Sunday's 1-1 draw with the San Diego Wave.

“She had an issue with the first pitch at the baseball game,” Spirit coach Jonathan Giraldes said after the game, “and she's not going to be out this season. That's part of life. You've got to keep working hard.”

Bethune, along with Spirit teammates and fellow Olympians Trinity Rodman, Casey Kruger and Hal Hirschfeld, were honored at Nationals Park on Aug. 28.
