Jim Hartung, a former Olympic gymnast who played a significant role in U.S. gymnastics, has died at the age of 65. He was recognized for winning a gold medal during the 1984 Olympics and was a key member of the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ national championship team.

The University of Nebraska announced his passing on Monday. For nearly two decades, Hartung served as an assistant gymnastics coach at the institution, contributing to the development of many young athletes.

In a statement, the Nebraska State Athletic Department expressed its sorrow: “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Men’s Gymnastics Assistant Coach Jim Hartung. Our condolences go out to his family, friends, and everyone he influenced throughout his remarkable journey in gymnastics—from being a national champion to an Olympic gold medalist to a dedicated coach.”

They further emphasized, “Jim’s legacy as a Husker legend will endure for years to come. We are committed to providing support to our men’s gymnastics students and coaching staff during this challenging time.”

The details surrounding Hartung’s cause of death remain undisclosed.

During his collegiate career, Hartung secured seven individual NCAA titles with the Cornhuskers, including two all-around titles in 1981 and 1982. Nebraska won a total of four national championships from 1979 to 1982.
