Olympic gold medalist Sha'Carri Richardson taken into custody for suspected assault

Sha’Carri Richardson Arrested at Airport

Olympic gold medalist Sha’Carri Richardson was taken into custody last weekend following an altercation with her boyfriend, Splinter Christian Coleman.

The incident occurred at Seattle-Tacoma Airport on Sunday, where airport officials were alerted to a disturbance involving the couple. Reports indicate that Richardson allegedly grabbed Coleman’s backpack and pushed him against a wall, an act captured by surveillance cameras.

Additionally, it was reported that Richardson may have thrown an item, believed to be headphones, at Coleman. According to a police statement, Coleman chose not to pursue the matter further, expressing he did not wish to participate in the investigation.

Richardson, aged 25, was booked Sunday at 6:54 PM at the Southern Corrections Group facility in Des Moines, Washington, and subsequently released the following day at 1:13 PM.

This isn’t the first time Richardson has faced controversy at an airport. Earlier this year, she was removed from a flight after a dispute with a flight attendant, reportedly due to a disagreement over her perceived rudeness.

Sha’Carri Richardson notably won gold in the 100 meters at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest and earned silver at the Paris Games last summer. She also played a key role in bringing home gold in the 4×100 relay.

Richardson had hoped to compete in the Tokyo Olympics four years ago but was sidelined after testing positive for cannabis, resulting in a month-long suspension and loss of her place in the 100 meters event.

The U.S. had been looking for a female Olympic winner in the 100 meters for quite some time. Marion Jones was the last to achieve this in 2000, only to have her medal stripped due to performance-enhancing drug usage. Gail Devers won gold back in 1996 in a thrilling finish.

Most recently, Noah Lyles captured the men’s gold medal, just like Richardson, having also triumphed in the 2023 World Championships. He aimed for a double win but settled for bronze in the 200 meters, revealing he had battled Covid-19 during the competition.

Richardson is currently gearing up to compete in the women’s 100 meters at the upcoming U.S. track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon, where she holds a title as the defending champion.
