Organisers of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games opening ceremony have been unapologetically apologetic for any offence “caused” to Christians by a drag queen’s parody of Jesus’ Last Supper.
“Obviously there was no intention to show any disrespect to any religious group.” Declared Anne Decquin, a spokeswoman for Paris 2024, said the ritual was seen by many, including the French Bishops’ Conference, as a “mockery” of Christ’s Last Supper.
“The opening ceremony was meant to celebrate the generosity of the community,” she said. continuation“We believe this ambition has been achieved and of course we are truly sorry if any offence was caused to anyone.”
Marion Maréchal, a member of the European Parliament, blamed the unpleasant incident on France’s far-left minority, claiming that they do not represent the French people.
“To all Christians around the world who watched the #Paris2024 ceremony and felt insulted by this drag queen parody of the Last Supper, know that it is not France that is speaking, but a left-wing minority ready to respond to any provocation,” Maréchal said. Meanwhile, Italy’s Lega party leader Matteo Salvini described the incident as insulting and “despicable”.
“Opening the Olympics with an insult to billions of Christians around the world is a really bad start, dear French people. Despicable,” Salvini wrote to X.
