Olympic snowboarder Anna Gasser hurt in unusual accident

Anna Gasser, a two-time Olympic champion snowboarder, recently suffered a dislocated shoulder and a biceps tendon injury due to an unexpected accident while surfing. This unfortunate event led to her needing surgery, as she shared on Instagram.

Gasser, who secured gold medals at the 2018 Pyeongchang and 2022 Beijing Olympics, expressed her shock, stating, “How can everything change instantly?” In her Instagram post, she mentioned her decision to have the surgery quickly to ensure she’ll be fully ready for the next season.

The 33-year-old athlete also posted a photo from the hospital, showcasing her arm in a cast, alongside clips of the incident itself.

“It’s unfortunate that my summer plans have shifted, and for now, I’ll just be observing,” she added. “But I plan to make the most of it and come back strong.” Gasser, a four-time Winter X-Game medalist, has her eyes set on the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics.

In an update to Ski Austria, she noted that the medical assessment revealed a temporary shoulder dislocation, mentioning that it affected her polarity and biceps tendons. Gasser described the surgery as necessary to regain stability in her shoulder, and while she finds it challenging to hold back for now, she’s focusing on training for selected World Cup competitions in preparation for the upcoming Olympics.

She plans her training sessions for 2026 mainly in glacial areas of Austria and Switzerland, shifting away from Australia. The training is set to take place from mid-August to mid-September.

The next Winter Olympics are scheduled to kick off on February 6th and run until February 22nd.
