Controversy Surrounds Swiss Commentator’s Remarks on Israeli Athlete
A Swiss Olympic commentator has faced backlash after making disparaging comments about an Israeli athlete during a live broadcast. Stefan Lena, who works for Radio Television Suisse, criticized bobsled pilot Adam Edelman, focusing more on his social media presence than on the competition itself.
During the broadcast, Lena referred to Edelman as “the first Olympic athlete and a die-hard Zionist” who, according to him, has made several social media posts endorsing “genocide in Gaza.” Lena’s remarks came in response to Edelman’s statement that Israel’s military actions following the October 7 terrorist attack were “the most morally just war in history.”
As the segment gained attention, Swiss Radio Television decided to remove the comments from their coverage. The network acknowledged the accuracy of the information but stated that such a tirade was unsuitable for Olympic coverage. A spokesperson clarified that while the reporter aimed to discuss the International Olympic Committee’s policy regarding athletes’ statements, the length and nature of the commentary were inappropriate for the context.
In response to the comments, Adam Edelman expressed his disbelief on social media. He highlighted the determination of his team, saying, “Shul Runnings is a team of six proud Israelis on the Olympic stage… We don’t have a coach. We don’t have a big program. Just dreams, grit, and unwavering pride in those we represent.” He concluded by emphasizing their focus on competition ahead.
Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador to Israel, condemned Lena’s remarks, calling them “disgusting” and labeling him a bigot for his comments towards the Israeli Olympic bobsled team and its captain.
