The most talent-rich men’s basketball tournament in Olympic history has advanced to the knockout rounds. The tournament began with 12 teams but has now been whittled down to eight with tournament brackets determined in group play. South Sudan, Japan, Puerto Rico and Spain are heading home, while the remaining teams will advance in a single-elimination tournament until a champion is decided.
The USA won their group match 3-0 with a +64 margin of victory and will enter the knockout stage as the No. 1 seed. Germany, the winners of Group B and the defending FIBA World Cup champions, finished 3-0 with a +47 margin of victory. Canada was the only undefeated team with a +20 margin of victory.
The top two teams from each group advanced to the knockout stage, while the two teams who finished third in their groups with the best record and goal differential received wild card spots. Greece, led by Giannis Antetokounmpo, received one wild card spot, while Brazil won the other.
