Jets Rookie Impresses Despite Loss to Patriots
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — While the Jets had few silver linings in their 26-19 defeat against the Patriots, one bright spot was the performance of a rookie first-round pick.
This week, it was Omar Cooper Jr.’s moment to shine. The wide receiver made a notable return from a high-ankle sprain, finishing his day with six receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown, marking his first game since Week 1.
“It was a great feeling,” Cooper shared. “It felt good to finally be back out there.”
Cooper’s initial outing was cut short in the Week 1 victory against the Titans, where he made a 30-yard catch early on but injured his ankle in the process. This setback placed him on IR, and he had to sit out for the following four games.
On Sunday, he scored the Jets’ only touchdown with a 48-yard connection from Geno Smith in the third quarter. He consistently found himself open, leading the team in both receptions and receiving yards.
“I think Omar did a tremendous job coming back from injury. He fought hard to get back out there,” Smith remarked. “What he showcased is who he is: a playmaker. He makes tough catches look easy, and I was really impressed with his performance. Looking forward to more of this.”
Cooper isn’t the only Jets rookie making a splash. The team selected three players in the first round this year, and each has delivered standout performances. Edge rusher David Bailey, the No. 2 overall pick, recorded three sacks in last week’s win over the Browns, while tight end Kenyon Sadiq, drafted at No. 16, racked up 105 yards and a touchdown in a loss to the Lions. Despite his injury setback, Cooper mentioned he gained confidence from his initial game.
“I would definitely say that Titans game helped me build my confidence,” Cooper reflected. “That catch allowed me to trust in my abilities.”
Cooper and Sadiq are now the third rookie duo in Jets history to each have a 100-yard receiving game in a single season, joining the ranks of Rich Caster and Eddie Bell in 1970 and Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall in 2022.
