On this historic day, May 24, 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge opened across the East River, connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn. — It opened as the longest suspension bridge in the world.
According to the official New York City website, the Brooklyn Bridge was designed by John A. Roebling.
Construction began in 1869 and was completed in 1883.

That day, the Brooklyn Bridge opened with great celebration.
According to Oxford University Press, while schoolchildren and workers enjoyed a rare day off, thousands of people gathered from Brooklyn and Manhattan for the dedication, led by President Chester Arthur and New York Governor Grover Cleveland.

“The crowds cheered when Emily Roebling, wife of the chief engineer and an integral part of its construction, was the first to cross the bridge. [the bridge]”Fireworks lit up the sky that night,” the source noted.
A bridge connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan has long been an attractive option but has faced many obstacles.
“Fording the rapids of the East River seemed impossible, and a bridge would have had to be built higher than the river to allow large ships to pass,” Oxford University Press points out.
Hailed as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” the Brooklyn Bridge was truly a feat of civil engineering.
History.com reports that the Brooklyn Bridge’s two granite foundations were built inside wooden caissons, or waterproof chambers, that were sunk to a depth of 44 feet on the Brooklyn side and 78 feet on the New York side.
On this day in history, April 4, 1973, the World Trade Center opens in New York City, creating the tallest tower on Earth.
“At the time, little was known about the dangers of working in such conditions, and more than 100 workers suffered from ‘the bends,’ a pressure illness caused by the appearance of nitrogen bubbles in the bloodstream due to sudden pressure reduction,” the site noted.

There were also other construction accidents, including collapses and fires.
Hailed as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” the Brooklyn Bridge is truly a feat of civil engineering. On its opening day, thousands of people reportedly crossed it for the first time with the public, complete with fanfare and fireworks.

Washington Roebling, son of designer John Roebling, assumed the role of chief engineer for the project after his father’s death, but suffered the aforementioned “disability” while overseeing the work two years after construction began.
He was left permanently paralyzed, according to WNYC.
The iconic bridge was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1972.
According to the site, Washington Roebling’s wife, Emily, served as the chief engineer on site in her husband’s place and was considered the first female site engineer.
“Emily [Roebling] “She began to relay her husband’s instructions and frequently consulted with contractors and assistant engineers on the project, drawing on her own practical technical knowledge. Emily oversaw the bridge’s construction until completion and was well-respected by the engineers and city officials she worked with, though she was never given an official title in connection with the project,” the site states.

According to NYC.org, between 1944 and 1954, a complete reconstruction of the Brooklyn Bridge took place.
“The inner and outer trusses have been strengthened, new horizontal supports have been installed between the four main cables, the railway and trolley tracks have been removed, the road has been widened from two to three lanes and new approach roads have been constructed,” the source noted.

Additionally, “an additional approach ramp onto FDR Drive was opened in 1969.”
The iconic bridge was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1972.

As NYC.org points out, the Brooklyn Bridge, known for its stone arches, supports six lanes of vehicle traffic (no trucks allowed) and a shared path for pedestrians and bicycles.
According to the New York City Department of Transportation, more than 4,000 pedestrians and 3,100 cyclists cross the Brooklyn Bridge’s elevated walkway each day, and more than 120,000 vehicles use the bridge’s roadway, according to Brooklyn Waterfront History.
