One in eight people killed by men in the last 15 years are over 70, according to a specialized charity reporting an increasing number of elderly victims seeking domestic abuse.
Landmarks Reportdelves into the deaths of 2,000 women who were released prior to International Women's Day by the Census of Murders and killed by men. It shows that 262 women over the age of 70 have been killed since 2009.
Among them were Margaret Bidolph, 78, and 88-year-old Andreyland, who was killed in 2012 by Andrew Flood, a taxi driver who was in debt in Southport. Raped and murdered a 72-year-old Before robbing her house.
They also include older women who have also suffered extreme sexual violence. In 2024, the Guardian's Murdered Women Counting Campaign reported on all women allegedly killed by men.
National Bureau of Statistics (ONS) figures reveal that 375,000 people over the age of 60 in England and Wales reported domestic abuse between April 2022 and March 2023.
“The death of an elderly woman is not given enough attention,” she said. “I don't think the vulnerability of older women who live on their own or live in nursing homes is properly recognized.”
A study by Professor Hannah Bowes of Durham University showed that between 2010 and 2015, one in four murders in the country involved victims over the age of 60, with women likely being victims and male perpetrators. “This is especially important when you consider that people over the age of 60 made up about 18% of the population at the time, but 25% of the country's murders,” she said. “So the idea that older people are at a low risk of being killed is not supported by the data.”
Age According to the UK, almost two-thirds of adult family murder victims (63%) are over 55 years old, and older people are vulnerable to abuse from adult children and grandchildren from intimate partners. “It's shocking and tragic,” said Caroline Abraham, director of the charity. “Elders are often overlooked in domestic abuse policies and services, as their experiences don't always match the perception of domestic abuse stereotypes.”
Veronica Gray, deputy CEO of Hourglass, a charity working to prevent abuse of elderly people in the UK, said call demand has increased 50% over the past two years. “It's probably impossible to tell whether it's due to increased awareness or increased cases,” she said. “However, I think there is a greater likelihood of widespread abuse in an aging population.”
Professor Sarah Ronbey, an elderly domestic abuse expert at Sunderland University, said older women are unlikely to disclose abuse.
Her research with the National Institute of Health and Therapy (NIHR) revealed that abuse of some older victims began when they were still considered “family issues.” She said, “As they get older, they may be less likely to come into contact with services or disclose their experiences because they feel they may believe it or be rejected.
A report by Fasedivich Census shows that older women are more likely to be killed during robbery than younger women, indicating that 67% of women were killed in the context of robbery over the age of 60. These women “may be linked to age-related vulnerability.
However, how women were killed during the robbery suggests that their deaths were not intentional and strongly linked to misogyny, the report said. In the murder of women over 60 by strangers during robbery, almost half of them are involved in excessively and use of excess and free violence necessary to cause the death of the victim. At least four killings included sexual violence.
“We must ask why we see the use of sexual and persistent violence against older women, unknown to much younger men who killed them,” Ingara Smith said. “The misogynistic intentions in these killings are clear.”
