Israel Deploys Iron Dome to UAE Amid War Tensions with Iran
Israel has dispatched its Iron Dome air defense system to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to bolster protections for its ally as conflicts with Iran escalate, according to officials.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has authorized the special defense system’s deployment along with a contingent of Israeli soldiers to operate it. This decision comes in response to the potential threat of a significant Iranian retaliatory strike against the UAE, as shared by Israeli officials.
This action marks a notable first, as it’s the first time Israel has offered such an air defense capability to a Gulf nation. The Iron Dome batteries have reportedly intercepted numerous Iranian missiles during ongoing hostilities, according to Israeli claims.
The UAE has enjoyed solid relations with Israel since they signed a peace agreement in 2020. Emirati officials have acknowledged the support received from both Israel and the U.S. throughout the conflict.
The decision to enhance the UAE’s defense capabilities followed a phone call between Netanyahu and Emirati President Mohammed bin Zayed.
According to the UAE Ministry of Defense, Iran has launched roughly 550 ballistic and cruise missiles and over 2,200 drones aimed at their targets as part of broader strikes throughout the Middle East. It’s worth noting that a think tank in the UK highlighted that this barrage was the most extensive that Iran has directed at any nation during the war, signaling Tehran’s objection to the growing UAE-Israel ties.
While a majority of Iranian missiles and drones were successfully intercepted, some managed to breach the joint defense and strike military and civilian locations. Notably, Dubai, the UAE’s largest city, has been targeted multiple times. Reports suggest that Iranian drones may have attacked significant sites like an international financial hub, a U.S. consulate, and an airfield.
Moreover, the UAE is actively observing defense initiatives from the U.S. and nations like France, Britain, Italy, and Australia as they work to secure the emirate during this turbulent time.
Reflecting on the situation, an Emirati official remarked, “It was a really eye-opening moment. We found out who our real friends are.” It’s interesting to think how such conflicts can clarify international relationships, sometimes in unexpected ways.
