"One of my 9 lives": Dashcam video captures police accident in front of a man’s vehicle

Virginia Beach, Virginia – Police in Virginia Beach reported that they were responding to an incident when they collided with another vehicle on Monday evening.

Authorities stated that the injuries sustained by the police officers were minor, while the truck driver was seriously injured. Both individuals were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Steve Hammonds was driving for Uber at the time and had just arrived at the intersection shortly before the crash occurred.

“I was picking up a passenger from Burger King, who lived right behind the shopping center,” he recounted.

His dash cam captured the moment at the intersection as the crash unfolded.

“I could see the officers approaching. Their lights were flashing, and the sirens were blaring. It wasn’t your typical red and blue; it was more of a bright white light,” he described. “They took a sharp turn and seemed to be going really fast. Then the truck came out of nowhere—it happened so quickly.”

Baffled, Hammonds and his passengers watched as the black truck flipped over in front of them.

“The sound of the impact was incredibly loud,” he shared. “It was this terrifying noise, and when the truck turned on its side, we could see people rushing towards it immediately.”

He noted that the truck driver was able to exit through the passenger door following the collision.

This incident raises numerous questions about potential negligence or whether a lawsuit might follow.

John Fletcher from the law firm Tavss Fletcher clarified the complexities involved. “I’ve heard people say, ‘Can you sue city hall?’ and there’s some truth to that,” he said, drawing from his 40 years of legal experience. “Governments often have sovereign immunity, meaning they can’t be sued for actions that are part of their duties—like police work tied to public safety.”

As for Hammonds, he expressed relief that everyone involved survived the incident. He hopes both the truck driver and the officers will make full recoveries and is thankful he wasn’t directly affected.

“It felt like one of my nine lives,” he remarked, reflecting on the truck flipping over in front of him. “I just want to express my hope that everyone involved is okay. I’ve shared the video to convey what happened.”
