Investigation Underway After Shooting in Paris Suburb
Specialized counter-terrorism prosecutors are looking into a shooting incident in Trappes, a multicultural suburb of Paris, where a gunman killed at least one person and injured several others.
On Friday morning, a 26-year-old was reported dead, while multiple individuals sustained injuries. French officials are still determining the exact number of victims and their identities. Local media has highlighted that among the injured is a 12-year-old child who suffered ten gunshot wounds, alongside three adults aged 48, 29, and 21.
According to a national newspaper, a man driving a Renault Clio opened fire from his vehicle in various spots around Trappes, including city squares, a gas station, a highway, a health center, a pharmacy, and the local train station. The police responded quickly, apprehending a 39-year-old suspect within ten minutes of the emergency calls. Fortunately, no law enforcement officers were harmed during the incident.
UPDATE 1545 BST: Investigation into Possible Terrorism
France’s Interior Minister, Laurent Nunez, indicated that while the investigation is still in its early stages, the charges being considered by the prosecutor are quite clear. The inquiry is focused on “murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise,” particularly considering if the acts were motivated by the suspect’s perceived or actual affiliation with a race, ethnic group, nation, or religion.
The Mayor of Trappes, Ali Rabeh, has been vocal about the situation, suggesting that the attack was racist in nature, likely stemming from Islamophobia. He claimed, “This is probably one of the first attempts at mass crime with Islamophobic and racist overtones.” Rabeh added that the investigation would shed more light on the motives behind the attack.
The mayor further pointed fingers at opposition politicians and media narratives that he believes incite violence against “Arab-Muslims.” He emphasized that all public figures have a responsibility to foster harmony and avoid fueling divisions within the Republic.
UPDATE 1415 BST: Details About the Suspect
More information has emerged about the alleged shooter, a 39-year-old from the nearby town of Plaisir, who is reportedly known to the police for prior delinquent behavior. When apprehended, he was found in possession of a World War II-era Mark Two Sten submachine gun, along with gas canisters and some cocaine.
His apartment was reportedly booby-trapped; there are claims that the domestic gas supply was left on, posing a significant danger. Counter-terrorism units and bomb disposal teams responded to the scene to ensure safety.
The ongoing investigation has transitioned to the national counter-terrorism office, which is examining the attack and considering if the shooting was motivated by real or perceived affiliations with specific racial or religious identities.
A local newspaper reported that the gunman used an antique Sten gun, which was widely manufactured during World War II. After solving initial reliability issues, it became a favored weapon among various military groups, including the French resistance.
Mayor Rabeh expressed concern over the random nature of the shooting, indicating the shooter seemed intent on creating chaos and causing a “bloodbath.” He controversially suggested the victim and some injured individuals may have been of African or North African descent, hinting that this could point to a racial motive behind the attack.
Trappes, a suburb with a multicultural background, has been under scrutiny before, especially during the Syrian civil war when many young individuals left the area to join extremist groups. Previous incidents of violence have also marred the suburb’s reputation.
In 2021, discussions arose about the state’s control over the suburb when a local academic faced backlash for criticizing the societal changes in Trappes, noting the growing pressure on various communities and the exodus of others.
In the wake of the recent attack, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu acknowledged the severity of the situation, assuring that the government was mobilizing all necessary resources. President Emmanuel Macron also expressed his sorrow over the tragedy, extending his thoughts to the victims and commending law enforcement for their prompt action.
Opposition leader Marine Le Pen condemned the violence, calling it a “barbaric act,” and insisted that the motives behind it must be thoroughly investigated.
