One-Third of Democrats and Democrat-Leaning Americans Say Biden Should Withdraw

A recent Economist/YouGov poll found that a third of Democrats and Democratic-leaning Americans believe President Joe Biden should drop out of the presidential race.

investigation Asked Democrats and Democratic supporters: “Should Joe Biden continue as the Democratic nominee or withdraw?”

Half (50%) said Biden should continue to campaign, while about a third (32%) said he should withdraw, with the remaining 18% remaining unsure.

Broken down further, 51% of Democrats said Biden should continue to run, while 30% said he should drop out, but 43% of independents said Biden should continue to run, while 41% said he should drop out.

The survey asked Republicans and Republican-leaning independents the same questions about Trump, but there was a clear consensus: 86% said he should continue to run, and just 7% said he should drop out.

Broken down, 88% of Republicans said Trump should continue to run, while 7% said he should drop out. Similarly, 77% of independents said Trump should continue to run for president, while 10% said he should drop out.

The survey also found that a majority of Republicans and Republican leaners (44%) believe Biden’s continued campaigning would have no impact on Trump’s chances of winning, while an additional 35% said they believe Trump would have a higher chance of winning if Biden becomes the nominee.

Conversely, the survey asked Democrats and Democratic leaners, “If the Republican nominee was Donald Trump or someone else, do you think Joe Biden is more likely to win the presidential election in November?”

The results were mixed, with 31% saying they thought Biden would be more likely to win if Trump became the nominee, 29% saying they didn’t know, 24% saying it made no difference, and 16% saying Biden would be more likely to win if someone ran in place of the former president.

The survey was conducted among 1,608 U.S. adults between June 30 and July 2, 2024. The post-debate poll comes as Democrats are struggling. Following Biden’s dismal performance in the debates and his subsequent drop in the polls, Biden’s family and the White House are desperately trying to convince their supporters that he can stay in the race and win.

However, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) appears to be fully endorsing Biden, circulating the following talking points, as reported by NBC News: report“Some sources have misleadingly suggested that there is no procedural means to replace the president as the party’s front-runner, without sharing the path forward if the president leaves office.”
