Only 1 in 3 Democrats Feel Hopeful About the Party’s Future

President Donald Trump’s return to the White House is being felt strongly, with around one-third of Democrats expressing optimism about their party’s future.

A recent opinion survey by the Associated Press/NORC Civil Service Research Center found that roughly 35% of Democrats surveyed are “very or somewhat” optimistic about the future of their party.

However, there’s more troubling news for committed Democrats.

Another 36% feel “very or somewhat” pessimistic about what lies ahead. Additionally, about 29% sit somewhere in the middle, recognizing Trump’s significant potential for a comeback in the 2024 election.

Democratic optimism has decreased by over 20 points since July 2024, when it was around 57%, influenced by the noticeable strength of the MAGA movement.

In total, only 17% of Americans surveyed feel optimistic about the Democratic Party’s future, while nearly half, at 49%, are pessimistic. About a third of respondents are neutral on the matter.

Republicans appear to have more confidence in their party’s prospects compared to Democrats, particularly as the president follows through on his commitments.

Over half of the surveyed Republican voters, 55%, report being “very or somewhat” optimistic about their party’s future. Conversely, 20% feel the opposite, with 24% unsure about the GOP’s fate.

The GOP’s optimism has remained stable at 47% since last July.

The AP/NORC survey was conducted with 1,175 U.S. adults between May 1-5, and the margin of error is 4 percentage points.
