So, Paul Rudd is really doing a fantastic job in the latest season of Only Murders in the Building, right?
**Spoilers for Season 5 Episode 4 ahead **
If you’ve been following this Hulu mystery comedy for a few years, you might remember Rudd from seasons 2 and 3, where he played Ben Glenroy, a Hollywood actor involved in… well, a murder. It’s always a bit shocking, the whole death thing in shows. Maybe it’s something viewers should reconsider sometimes.
In the recent episode titled “Dirty Birds,” characters like Mabel (Selena Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin), and Oliver (Martin Short) are trying to adapt to life in the Arconia after the absence of Leicester (Teddy Colka). Unfortunately, their automated doorman, known as Restus, can’t be called for help anymore. It’s a strange time for these characters.
Uma (Jackie Hoffman) comments, “They’re trying to convince us it’s a tribute, not a machine uprising.” To which Rest responds, “That’s true; my biggest challenge is my impact on humans.” It leads to a complicated sense of humor, doesn’t it?
Later on, Mabel finds herself trying to avoid Beanie Feldstein’s character in the building. Things get tense when Rest starts throwing around statistics about podcast ratings, which, uh, doesn’t help her predicament.
John Hoffman, the show’s co-creator, revealed that they initially didn’t plan for Rudd to voice the robot. Interestingly, he mentioned in an interview that they had a different voice for the character before settling on Rudd’s. “Thank goodness you can disguise the voice!” he quipped, adding that Rudd’s voice will continue to pop up in future episodes of the season.
“He was a great fit for it,” Hoffman noted. With season 5 unfolding on Hulu, I’m genuinely looking forward to more of what his character has to say—it’s always a little quirky.
The first four episodes of Only Murders in the Building Season 5 are available for streaming on Hulu, and a new episode drops at midnight ET on Tuesdays.
