Only Way GOP Can Recover Is ‘Through a Blowout’ of Trump in November

Democratic strategist James Carville said Wednesday on MSNBC's “The Beat” that the only way the Republican Party could transition to a leader different from former President Donald Trump is if Vice President Kamala Harris wins a “landslide victory” in November.

Host Ari Melber said, “Politico has real reporting, and this isn't just speculation that the Republican Party is finished. Even if it's a close race and Trump really does lose, the Republican Party can rebuild rather than be tied to Trump. 'Republicans who want Trump to lose, including long-time Republicans across the country, are saying they believe this, and while they won't dare say it publicly, they are ready to move on from the Trump era.' What does this mean?”

“Remember, the Republicans lost in '64 and won the election in '68. The Democrats lost in '72 and won the election in '76,” Carville said. “So what I say to my Republican friends is, if you want your party back, if you want to be pro-business, pro-low taxes, pro-deregulation, stand erect for the national anthem. The only way you get it back is to lose in a big way. Harris winning 280 electoral votes is not going to change that. And that perception seems to be widespread not just among Washington elites and Trump opponents but on the ground as well.”
