Tragic Rabies Infection in Ontario Boy

An 11-year-old boy from Ontario, Canada, has died from a rabies infection, as reported in a medical journal article released recently.

The Canadian Medical Association Journal did not disclose the boy’s identity or that of his family. It mentioned that he was hospitalized weeks after coming into contact with a bat.

“Nineteen days prior to the appearance of symptoms, the boy’s family described an incident during their visit to their cottage in northern Ontario. He awoke to a bat colliding with his nose and mouth. After swatting the bat away, his father caught it in a pot and released it outside,” the CMAJ stated.

They noted, “There were no visible injuries on the child’s face, and the parents thought the bat was acting normally. Consequently, they did not seek medical attention.”

Twenty days after the bat encounter, the boy’s parents took him to the emergency department. Initially, he was sent home, but returned the next day and was admitted to the hospital.

According to doctors, his condition “quickly worsened” during his stay. Sadly, after over two weeks in the hospital, he passed away.

The article shared that “by the fifth day of hospitalization, the boy had lost his brainstem reflexes. Life support was stopped on the 17th day, and he passed away quietly with his family present.”

Health professionals advised that anyone who has had direct contact with a bat should reach out to public health officials, even if there are no obvious bites or scratches. Rabies can be fatal if not treated quickly with post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), and treatment is usually effective if administered shortly after exposure.
