Kieron Moore, at 39 years old, was handed a three-year sentence after being found guilty of serious offenses including torture and sexual assault against a woman, who was identified in the 2022 case.
Judge M. Townsend from Newmarket issued a ruling on August 22nd. The judgement encompasses multiple charges, including forced confinement and sexual assault involving a firearm, along with a lifetime ban on weapon possession and a 20-year registration as a sex offender.
The case also includes the youth known as SM under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Moore is prohibited from any contact with him while imprisoned. SM was convicted earlier this year and is due for sentencing in Oshawa next month.
To protect the victim’s identity, a non-public order was issued in March 2024.
The assault took place on November 1, 2022, when the victim was allegedly attacked outside of Thornhill Square and compelled into a vehicle at gunpoint. Once confined in a garage, the victim was subjected to severe abuse, including beatings and threats involving a syringe filled with fentanyl, with the assailants demanding a ransom of $1 million in Bitcoin.
Detective Renwick, who worked on the case, indicated that the perpetrators were primarily after cryptocurrency during the ordeal.
Throughout the incident, Moore allegedly threatened the victim’s life, insisting on sexual acts. The victim ultimately succeeded in escaping and sought assistance from a nearby neighbor.
This case highlights a growing trend of violent incidents connected to cryptocurrencies, which include attacks where victims are coerced to hand over their digital assets.
The rising number of such incidents demonstrates how cryptocurrencies have become specific targets for criminals. Courts and law enforcement are treating these ransom demands similarly to traditional armed robbery cases.
